NRM MPs to discuss proposed UPDF Act amendments
Members of Parliament (MPs) subscribing to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) will meet at State House, Entebbe, on Friday for a crucial discussion regarding proposed amendments to the UPDF Act, 2005.
Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua announced that the meeting will focus on proposals from the Attorney General’s Office and the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs for inclusion in the UPDF Act, 2005.
On Thursday, Obua moved to withdraw the UPDF Amendment Bill, explaining that this was necessary to enrich the bill and align it with the recent Supreme Court ruling.
“The withdrawal of the bill is primarily to enrich it and to ensure that we comply with the ruling of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Uganda,” Obua said.
On March 31, 2025, the Supreme Court ruled that the prosecution of civilians in the General Court Martial and military courts is unconstitutional, nullifying such prosecutions with immediate effect. Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka informed Parliament two weeks ago that the government had begun implementing the ruling.
