Kikuube leaders attribute worrying state of water and sanitation to population increase

Kikuube leaders have expressed concern over lack of water and poor sanitation due to the high population in the district.
According to a June 2022 research conducted by the Ministry of Water and Environment, functionality of water sources by technology for Kikuube district indicates that; the protected spring functionality stands at 321 and non-functional stands at 0, functionali shallow wells are 260, and 6 are non-functional. Additionally, 181 deep boreholes are functional, and 50 are non-functional while functional rain water tanks are 54 and 3 non-functional.
Speaking to journalists during the Kikuube district Councilors Induction exercise held at Kolping Hotel in Hoima City, the district chairperson, Peter Banura, said that the situation is worrying due to the high population in Kikuube of about 400,000 resident communities including refugees from Kyangwari settlement camps.
Banura added that the biggest challenge they face is lack of water and contamination due to the big population of people living in the community.
Meanwhile, the induction facilitator, Patrick Rubangakene says that the district local government needs to put emphasis on access to improved sanitation and hygiene facilities in schools and communities.
Rubangakene added that government needs to fast-track the review of the National Water Policy and Act to address new challenges.
